Coronado Senior Center

Coronado Senior Citizen Center: The Coronado Senior Center is located at 1019 Seventh Street, adjacent to the public library. It offers a variety of interesting and enjoyable activities for senior citizens and the general public. While many of these activities are recreational, educational, social and artistic, the center also provides assistance with legal aid, tax preparation and other programs. Coronado Senior Housing

On November 1, 2005, the city of Coronaod approved the development of 30 one bedroom affordable housing development for senior citizens whose annual income of 50% and 60% of the current area median income. The units are oriented to maximize the view of Spreckels Park. The complex also features a community room, with a rooftop terrace, for residents in the complex to use for social gatherings and other events. The developer of the project is the San Diego Interfaith Housing Foundation. They have entered in to a long term agreement with the Community Development Agency Board. to construct, operate, and maintain the complex. The members of the Agency board are the same members as the members of the city council.

San Diego Interfaith Housing Foundation (SDIHF) currently manages an interest list that allows them to communicate the progress of the project to interested individuals. At this time they are not accepting names for a waiting list for prospective tenants. Please note, being added to the interest list does not affect the possibility of tenancy in the property. It is simply a communication list. Once the site is further developed, SDIHF will notify the public of the process to apply for residency in the property. Who will be eligable to live in the these affordable senior housing units.

The development is being constructed to house individuals (and couples) 55 years and older, who meet affordable income levels. When complete, residents in the complex will be required to certify their income in order to verify that they meet income requirements. The income requirements are set by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for the County of San Diego and is updated annually. San Diego Interfaith Housing Foundation will distribute more information regarding eligibility requirements in the fall of 2007.

Recreational Activities

Coronado Recreation Services has initiated a senior fitness program which meets 3 times a week for 1 hour at a time. The class includes flexibility, core strength, fitness and balance. They also have a bi-monthly social. The City of Coronado offers up to two classes of 10-15 participants per class. Participants range in age from 55 to 88 years of age. The development of this program was inspired by becoming a Step Up to Health Community in 2005. The program continues to exceed the expectations of Kathy Ferrar, Fitness Specialist with Coronado Recreation Services, New participants sign up each month. She also notes that the addition of a bi-monthly social event has truly enhanced the group cohesiveness.

Senior Police Volunteer Patrol

The Police Senior Volunteer Patrol is the largest volunteer organization in the City. Over 40 active seniors currently serve as the "eyes and ears" of the Police Department. The program, currently in its eighth year, has served as a model for many small police departments throughout the country.
Volunteering between four and twenty hours a week, participants assist the Police Department in a variety of activities. Out in the field, they provide traffic control, give warnings of violations and conduct home security checks for residents who are on vacation. These volunteers also assist at special events, such as the Fourth of July parade or safety and crime prevention fairs. At the station, they give tours, take fingerprints, log personal property, file reports, enter data and answer phones.
Senior volunteers may come from different backgrounds, but they share two common traits - a desire to help others and be involved in their community. The Patrol is made up of seniors age 55 and older, with an average age of 75. Volunteers have professional backgrounds that include military officers and pilots, FBI agents, physicians, attorneys, homemakers and bankers. Some even maintain full-time jobs while serving in the program. No law enforcement experience is required, but volunteers are carefully screened and attend an 80-hour training academy with additional monthly training.
